Why these hold and cheap ones don't
Most dress socks are a plain knit with an elastic band at the top. The elastic dies after a few washes and the sock starts its slow slide into your shoe. These are built the other way round.
Mercerized cotton
The yarn is combed, twisted and treated so the fibre lies flat. That is where the quiet sheen comes from, and why it does not go fuzzy or baggy. Tailors call it fil d'Écosse.
A rib that grips
The vertical rib does the holding, not a band of elastic. It stretches with your calf and returns, wash after wash, so the sock stays where you put it at 8am.
